About Umie Aktif
Umie Aktif is a programme created by 5 young people led by Nik Sin Nik Man, over the last 3 years to generate income for underserved communities at Chow Kit, especially the mothers, by marketing handicraft products such as dolls and bags. This program was created as a platform to help mothers here to experience the first step in entrepreneurship. In addition, Umie Aktif also teaches these mothers to communicate in English.
All handicrafts were sold online via Facebook and Instagram, where sales were later re-distributed to the women. This programme is well received from the mothers in Chow Kit. To date, the number of program participants has reached almost 30 people.
The volunteer-operated programme also helped the mothers in Chow Kit get out of financial trouble. Other than that, the program also helps participants fill up spare time that will help generate additional income to relieve family's finances. One average, each participant is able to earn between RM300 to RM350 a month through the products made and sold.
